Five Books That Make Us Better Marketers

Five Books That Make Us Better Marketers

We’re about to take a much needed break over the holidays, which is the perfect time to catch up on some reading. Our team is always trying to learn more about marketing and advertising, and we love sharing the books that have helped us think differently and succeed in our careers. Here’s a rundown of five marketing books we’re reading in the office that could help you better develop your company’s marketing strategies and overall approach to advertising.

The Art of War

Technology has changed a lot over the past 2,500 years, but how we approach a challenge remains the same. The keys to winning a war are developing a solid strategy and knowing your enemy. The keys to great advertising and marketing are developing a solid strategy, knowing your audience and knowing the competition. The tactics and tips in this book universally apply to leadership, business and life in general.

The Talent Code

Many of us choose careers we assume we have a natural talent for – whether it’s graphic design because we’re artistic or account services because we love talking to people. But this book explains that anyone can become talented at anything, as long as they work hard at it. Follow this great advice to tap into your brain and develop your marketing skills.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

This book on game theory discusses the difficulties of cooperation and our selfish desire to always win. We can accomplish more when we work together, but there has to be a personal reward in order for us to be willing to help others. The fascinating read goes through the different strategies people can take to get their way and the positive and negative consequences of each of them.

The ONE Thing

As technology progresses, we have so much more to do. Campaigns spread out across platforms, emails come in on our phones and we have to constantly train and learn about the latest next big thing. But what’s the most important thing to you, and how do you make time for it? It’s impossible to do it all, so this book helps you figure out how to de-clutter, stay productive, work toward your career goals and still have a life outside of work.

Hey Whipple, Squeeze This

The definitive book on advertising is an insider’s look at the time and effort it takes to create a campaign or discover a big idea. While creative concepts are extremely important, strategy, media and the client all play important roles in successfully selling a product. Although it’s not quite as old as The Art of War, the topics covered from nearly 20 years ago are still just as relevant in today’s digital marketing age.

Do you have a marketing book, or just a book in general, that gave you great advice you apply to your day-to-day life? We’d love to read it! Tweet us your top picks @thejamesagency.
